At the intersection of Abovyan and Sayat-Nova streets in the heart of Yerevan stand two churches forming a unique religious ensemble: the Church of the Holy Mother of God Katoghike and the Church of St Anne, both central to the Armenian capital's spiritual life. The smaller of the two is the older survivor of a much larger church demolished in the 1930s; when the walls came down, a compact medieval chapel was found embedded inside them, and public pressure saved it. Barely larger than a room, it is the oldest standing church in the city. The neighboring St Anne, completed far more recently in a traditional Armenian idiom, was built to give the site a full-scale church again and adjoins the residence of the Catholicos in Yerevan.
