In the small village of Turen in Malang Regency, East Java, the Masjid Tiban, or Tiban Mosque, is a striking religious complex dating back several decades. Its popular name derives from a local belief that the building appeared suddenly, as if raised overnight, a story the community itself disputes, since the complex was built gradually by the students who live there. Beyond its unique architectural appearance, an exuberant, many-storeyed assembly of arches, domes, spiral stairways and carved galleries that borrows freely from Middle Eastern, Chinese and Javanese sources, the site also functions as a boarding school accommodating thousands of students, blending Islamic teaching with the preservation of local customs.
