In the Tabgha region, some two hundred metres below sea level near the shores of the Sea of Galilee, stands the Church of the Multiplication, commemorating a pivotal episode in the life of Jesus and drawing pilgrims to this tranquil lakeside setting. The present church, cared for by German Benedictine monks, was completed in the early 1980s and follows the plan of the Byzantine basilica that once occupied the site. Its great attraction is the 5th-century mosaic floor: a basket of loaves flanked by two fish set before the altar stone, and borders alive with herons, ducks and lotus flowers rendered with exceptional freshness. The film reads the building as both a place of prayer and a rare survival of early Christian art.
