Issogne Castle, Aosta Valley, Italy

Issogne Castle, Aosta Valley, Italy

On the opposite bank of the Dora Baltea from Verrès Castle stands Issogne Castle, renowned for its rich history and stately presence in Italy's Aosta Valley. Dating to the 15th century, it showcases Renaissance elegance through its frescoed walls and characteristic Italian courtyard. Built for the Challant family as a residence rather than a stronghold, it turns its plain outer walls towards the valley and reserves its display for the interior, where painted lunettes under the arcade depict the trades and daily life of the period. A wrought-iron fountain in the form of a pomegranate tree stands at the centre of the courtyard.
