Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka

Located in central Sri Lanka, Polonnaruwa was the island's medieval capital and is today a UNESCO World Heritage site. This documentary explores its ancient temples, royal palaces and irrigation systems, revealing the political, religious and artistic achievements of a once-powerful civilisation. The city flourished from the eleventh century, and its ruins remain remarkably legible: brick palace walls still standing several storeys high, circular relic houses, and the colossal Buddha figures carved from a single granite face at Gal Vihara, among the finest sculptures in South Asia. Around them stretch the great reservoirs that made the kingdom possible. Filmed in 4K across the full archaeological park.
