The Faisal Mosque in Islamabad is the fifth-largest mosque in the world and the largest in South Asia, set at the foothills of the Margalla Hills at the northern edge of the Pakistani capital. Completed in the 1980s to the design of Turkish architect Vedat Dalokay, and funded by the Saudi king whose name it bears, it broke with tradition entirely: in place of a dome, its contemporary design features eight concrete shell sides rising to a peak, drawing inspiration from the form of a traditional Bedouin tent, while four slender minarets frame the courtyard.
