Primarily known for its picturesque, isolated setting, Dârjiu lies in the Székely Land of eastern Transylvania, central Romania. Comprising the villages of Dârjiu and Mujna, the area boasts an eclectic history first recorded in 1334. Tradition holds that Mongol invasions destroyed the original settlement, leading survivors to resettle in what is now the village's Felszeg quarter. At its heart stands a Unitarian fortified church, whose thick defensive walls and corner towers once sheltered the whole community, and whose interior preserves remarkable medieval wall paintings. Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List among the Villages with Fortified Churches in Transylvania, Dârjiu offers rare access to a living Székely village.
