Fortified Manasija Monastery & the Resava Cave, Serbia

Fortified Manasija Monastery & the Resava Cave, Serbia

An outstanding creation of Serbian medieval heritage, Manasija Monastery represents a unique architectural concept within the lands of the Byzantine world, combining the roles of a monastery and a genuine military fortification in one striking complex. Founded in the early 15th century by Despot Stefan Lazarević, it is ringed by high walls and massive towers, and its church preserves frescoes counted among the masterpieces of the period. The monastery gave its name to the Resava school, a celebrated centre of manuscript copying and learning. Nearby, the Resava Cave opens a spectacular underground world of galleries, columns and coloured formations shaped over millennia.
