Krušedol Monastery, Serbia

Krušedol Monastery, Serbia

On the southern slopes of Fruška Gora lies Krušedol Monastery, legacy of the last Syrmian despot family, the Branković. Founded in the early 16th century, it is the oldest and most venerable of the many monasteries scattered across this wooded ridge, long known as the Holy Mountain of Serbia, and it became a burial place for patriarchs, princes and members of the Obrenović royal house. Its church preserves layers of fresco and later Baroque painting, together with a treasury of icons and manuscripts. Encircled by a park and chestnut trees, the monastery welcomes visitors through a striking main gate designed like a church.
