Tikhvin Assumption Monastery of the Theotokos, Russia

Tikhvin Assumption Monastery of the Theotokos, Russia

In Tikhvin, a city roughly 260 kilometres from St. Petersburg, stands the Tikhvin Assumption Monastery, one of Russia's foremost religious and cultural landmarks. According to tradition, the site marks where an icon of the Mother of God appeared to believers in 1383, cementing its status as a place of enduring devotion. The monastery itself was established in the mid-sixteenth century by order of Ivan the Terrible to house that icon, and its Assumption Cathedral has drawn pilgrims from across the Russian north ever since. Taken abroad during the Second World War, the Tikhvin icon spent decades in the United States before returning to the monastery in 2004, an event the film sets within the longer history of the complex.
