Wat Arun stands on the western bank of Bangkok's Chao Phraya River, revered as one of the city's most ancient and magnificent temples. Each morning it becomes the first place in Bangkok to catch the light of the rising sun, earning its evocative name: the Temple of the Dawn. Its central prang, raised to its present towering height in the early nineteenth century under the early Rattanakosin kings, is encrusted with fragments of Chinese porcelain and seashells that were once ballast in trading vessels, so that the whole spire glitters as the light shifts. Steep stairways climb its terraces to guardian figures and a view across the river to the Grand Palace.
