Big Buddha, Koh Samui, Thailand

Big Buddha, Koh Samui, Thailand

On the small rocky island of Koh Faan, off the north-eastern coast of Koh Samui in the Gulf of Thailand, stands Wat Phra Yai, better known as the Big Buddha Temple. Its golden figure, some twelve metres high and seated in the earth-touching posture that marks the moment of enlightenment, was raised in the early 1970s and is reached by a broad staircase flanked by serpentine naga balustrades. Though relatively new by the standards of Thai sacred architecture, this glittering and serene complex has become one of the island's most iconic spiritual landmarks, visible to arriving boats and aircraft alike. The film observes the temple at dawn and at dusk, when the gilding takes the light off the sea.
