Situated roughly eighty kilometres south of İzmir in western Turkey, Ephesus preserves some of the best-maintained ruins of the ancient world and was once regarded as one of the greatest Greek cities, a major port and the seat of the Temple of Artemis. Its finds are gathered in the archaeological museum at nearby Selçuk, where sculpture, domestic objects, funerary monuments and the celebrated cult statues of Artemis of Ephesus are displayed in thematic galleries.
