The Evangelistria Church

The Evangelistria Church

Evangelistria - the church of the Annunciation - is among the most widespread dedications in the Greek Orthodox world, and the churches that bear the name occupy a particular place in local life. This film observes one of them as an active sanctuary rather than a monument: the ordered iconostasis, the oil lamps and votive offerings, the polished wood of the stalls, the light that moves through the narrow windows in the course of a day. Around the building, the rhythm is that of the community itself. Doors open early and close late; visitors come in alone during the week to light a candle; on the feast day the church fills, the bells ring across the roofs and the celebration spills into the street. The programme gives space to the sound - chant, bells, silence - and to the gestures that structure Orthodox devotion. Filmed in 4K, it is a portrait of an ordinary sacred place, and of the continuity that such places quietly maintain.
