A metropolitan church is not simply a large church: it is the seat of a bishop and the reference point around which the religious life of a whole district is organised. This one, dedicated to the Presentation of the Virgin Mary, occupies that role in its own town, and the film observes what it means in practice. Inside, the iconostasis separates and connects nave and sanctuary; icons blackened by candle smoke are venerated by each visitor in turn; the bishop's throne, the chanters' stalls and the great chandelier define an order that has changed very little. Outside, the church anchors a square, and its bells still mark the hours of a working town. The programme follows the building through ordinary days and through a feast, giving weight to sound as much as to image: the chant, the censer, the crowd. Filmed in 4K, it offers a clear and unhurried account of Greek Orthodox worship as it is actually practised.
