The Basilica of Jesus the Adolescent, Nazareth

The Basilica of Jesus the Adolescent, Nazareth

Most of the sanctuaries of Nazareth commemorate a single event; this one is dedicated to what the Gospels leave unsaid, the years Jesus spent growing up in the town. The church belongs to a Salesian school complex set on the high ground above the old centre, and its architecture is a restrained Gothic revival worked in the pale limestone of the region: pointed arches, slender piers, tall windows and an interior kept deliberately spare, so that the light and the stone do the work. From the forecourt the view runs across the roofs of Nazareth to the surrounding hills. Filmed in 4K, the programme takes in the building, its setting and the educational community around it, and makes a natural companion piece to titles on the Basilica of the Annunciation and the other sanctuaries of the town.
