Yeruham: A Town in the Negev

Yeruham: A Town in the Negev

The Negev covers more than half of Israel, and Yeruham sits well inside it, in the highlands where the desert stops being a margin and becomes the whole horizon. Around the town, stony plateaux are cut by dry riverbeds that run only after a storm; the light shifts through the day from bleached white to deep ochre, and the nights are startlingly clear. At the edge of the built-up area, a lake and its surrounding park form an unexpected band of water and shade, a stopping point for migrating birds and a place of walks and picnics for residents. Filmed in 4K, with aerial sequences that reveal the geometry of the desert, the programme approaches Yeruham as a landscape film: the geology of the Negev, the rhythm of a small town set down in the middle of it, and the particular beauty of an arid country that reveals itself slowly.
