Between Bethlehem and the Dead Sea, the Greek Orthodox monastery of Mar Saba clings to the rock face above the Kidron valley, a stack of terraces, chapels and cells the colour of the desert itself. It was founded in 483 by Sabbas the Sanctified, whose disciples first lived as hermits in the surrounding caves before the community took architectural form. Monastic life has continued here almost without interruption ever since, following a rule and a liturgical tradition that spread from this desert to the wider Orthodox world. The compound guards the relics of its founder, returned from Venice in the twentieth century, along with icons, manuscripts and a library shaped by centuries of copying and study. Access remains deliberately restricted: women may approach only as far as the tower outside the walls. Filmed in a landscape of bare stone and extreme light, the programme documents a place where architecture, geography and spiritual discipline are inseparable, and where the rhythm of prayer has outlasted empires.
