The picturesque city of Lida in Belarus carries a compelling history, having emerged in the 13th century as a fortified settlement. Over the centuries that followed, from the 18th to the 20th century, it passed through the hands of various powers, including Poland and Russia, enriching its historical legacy. Its castle was raised by the grand dukes of Lithuania in the 14th century as one of a chain of strongholds built to hold off the Teutonic Knights, and it belongs to a distinctive regional type: a simple quadrangle of high stone and brick curtain walls, without a keep, with towers at opposing corners and a single gate. Besieged repeatedly over the following centuries, it fell into ruin and has since been substantially rebuilt.
