The Solovetsky Islands, or Solovki, rest in the White Sea's Onega Bay just 164 kilometres from the Arctic Circle in northern Russia. Human presence here spans nearly 7,000 years, with ancient settlement sites and burial mounds uncovered across the archipelago, offering a rare window into the deep prehistory of Russia's far north. The islands are best known for the stone labyrinths laid out on their shores in antiquity and for the great monastery founded in the fifteenth century, which together earned the archipelago inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Filmed under the long light of the northern summer, the documentary follows the low granite coastline, the lakes and the canals cut between them by generations of monks.
