Lahore's Walled City is a dense fabric of narrow lanes, and set within it is one of the few great houses of the Sikh period to have survived largely intact. The haveli bears the name of Nau Nihal Singh, grandson of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, and it is a showcase of the decorative arts of its moment: projecting timber balconies carved with astonishing density, brick facades enriched with painted and moulded ornament, interiors of frescoed walls, floral panels and ceilings inlaid with small mirrors. The film moves floor by floor through the building, up to the terraces and their view over the rooftops and minarets of the old city. Its later history is part of the interest: the mansion has long housed a girls' school, so the rooms are in daily use, and conservation must be reconciled with occupation.
