Las torres de la fortaleza de Izborsk

Las torres de la fortaleza de Izborsk

Izborsk belongs to the founding geography of the Russian north-west: a hilltop site above a valley of lakes and springs, settled long before the fortress that now defines it. The medieval stronghold, built of local grey limestone, follows the contour of the plateau, its towers set at the angles where defence mattered most. Time and weather have darkened the masonry to the colour of the rock it came from, so that walls and hillside read as one mass. Within the enclosure stands a church; below, the valley opens toward the Slovenian springs and the lake, a landscape as much a part of the site's identity as the fortifications. Filmed in 4K, the programme walks the perimeter, climbs the towers for the view over the valley, and treats Izborsk as a rare survival of early Russian military building.
