Hwaseong is a fortress with a personal motive. King Jeongjo moved his father's tomb to Suwon and surrounded the new town with a wall almost six kilometres long, drawing on Korean tradition and on Chinese and Western engineering treatises, with the scholar Jeong Yak-yong contributing devices such as a crane that sharply reduced construction time. What makes the site exceptional is the record: the entire project was documented in a detailed illustrated report, which allowed twentieth-century restorers to rebuild damaged sections with unusual accuracy. The film walks the full circuit - gates, command posts, artillery platforms, floodgates over the stream - and shows how the wall now runs through a living city rather than around it.
