La catedral de San Volodímir

La catedral de San Volodímir

The dedication tells the essential story. Volodymyr, the prince remembered for the baptism that turned Kyivan Rus towards Byzantine Christianity, stands at the origin of a religious culture whose forms — the domed silhouette, the screen of icons, the painted saints rising into the vaults — have shaped church building across Ukraine ever since. The cathedral that bears his name belongs squarely to that lineage. The film approaches it first from the street, taking in the massing of the domes and the coloured facades, then moves inside, where the eye is drawn upward through tiers of painting to the light of the drum, and forward to the gilded iconostasis that separates the congregation from the sanctuary. Rather than reciting a chronology, the programme concentrates on how such a building is used: the movement of worshippers, candles set before icons, the sung liturgy filling a space designed to carry it. The result is a portrait of a place of worship and of an unbroken visual tradition, suited to strands on Eastern Christianity, sacred architecture and the heritage of Ukraine.
