Amid the beauty and elegance of Budapest stands a landmark of deep significance to the Jewish faith and its people: the Dohány Street Synagogue, also known as the Great Synagogue. Located in the city's 7th district, it holds the distinction of being the largest synagogue in Europe. Built in the mid-nineteenth century to a Moorish Revival design, its twin onion-domed towers, banded brickwork and richly patterned interior reflect a congregation confident of its place in a modernizing imperial city. The complex extends well beyond the prayer hall, taking in the Heroes' Temple, the Jewish Museum, an arcaded cemetery court and a memorial garden whose metal weeping willow commemorates the victims of the Holocaust in Hungary.
