Historical City Centre of Yogyakarta (Museum Sonobudoyo), Indonesia

The Historical City Centre of Yogyakarta embodies a traditional Javanese town on a lowland at the foot of Merapi Volcano. Unlike other Javanese cities, its layout was deliberately designed as a microcosm reflecting Javanese cosmology and philosophy, with every street, building and river carrying symbolic meaning, earning the district recognition as a World Heritage Site. The plan is organized along a ceremonial axis running through the walled palace of the sultan, still a living court, and marked at either end by monuments that give the alignment its cosmological reading. On the northern square stands Museum Sonobudoyo, whose collections of Javanese antiquities, court arts, wayang puppets and gamelan document that culture in depth.
