Bethphage, meaning 'house of early fig', lies between Bethany and the Mount of Olives near Jerusalem and marks the traditional starting point of Jesus's triumphal entry on Palm Sunday. Its church preserves a stone said to be the one from which he mounted the donkey for his procession into the city. The sanctuary belongs to the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land and stands on the eastern slope of the mount, on the old road up from Jericho. The venerated block, rediscovered in the 19th century, carries medieval paintings on its four faces showing the raising of Lazarus and the crowd with palms. Each year the Palm Sunday procession sets out from here and descends towards the Old City, one of the great living rituals of Jerusalem.
