Tempietto Malchittu, Sardinia, Italy

Tempietto Malchittu, Sardinia, Italy

Arzachena, part of the Costa Smeralda, opens the way into the heart of Gallura and its rich Sardinian traditions and ancient history. About a kilometer east of the town, on the edge of the valley, lies the Temple of Malchittu. Reached by a footpath across granite outcrops and scrub, the building is one of the rare structures of its kind on the island: an elongated dry-stone enclosure with a rounded end, set apart from any dwelling and generally interpreted as a place of worship of the Bronze Age communities that preceded and accompanied the nuragic towers. Its walls survive to a considerable height in the open landscape.
