Aosta Cathedral, Aosta Valley, Italy (Part 1)

Aosta Cathedral, Aosta Valley, Italy (Part 1)

Founded in the 4th century near an ancient Roman forum, the Aosta Cathedral traces back to the earliest spread of Christianity in the region. Remodeled with a neoclassical façade in 1848, it now also houses a museum dedicated to the Aosta Valley's sacred art. Behind that late frontage the building preserves a Romanesque core, with twin bell towers, a crypt and a celebrated cycle of early medieval paintings surviving above the vaults. Mosaic pavements and carved choir stalls complete an ensemble that ranks alongside the collegiate church of Sant'Orso among the principal monuments of the valley. This first episode sets out its origins and architecture.
