Kuskovo Park, Russia

Kuskovo Park, Russia

The Kuskovo Estate, a unique 18th-century cultural monument in Moscow, showcases an architectural complex of pavilions, a greenhouse and a grotto. Laid out for Count Pyotr Sheremetev, one of the wealthiest landowners of his age, it was conceived as a summer residence for entertaining on a princely scale, with a formal French garden, a lake and a wooden palace dressed to imitate stone. The Dutch and Italian houses, the grotto and the orangery survive as a rare complete example of Russian estate planning before the fashion for landscape parks took hold. Today it houses the State Museum of Ceramics alongside the historic Kuskovo Estate grounds, preserving a rich chapter of Russian aristocratic life.
