In the heart of Tunisia, between mountains and sea, lies Kairouan, home to the Great Mosque long considered the fourth holiest site in Islam after Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem. Founded in the seventh century by Uqba ibn Nafi at the birth of the city, and rebuilt in its present form under the Aghlabids in the ninth, it is among the oldest places of worship in the Muslim West: a vast marble courtyard, a massive square minaret and a hypostyle prayer hall carried on hundreds of columns salvaged from Roman and Byzantine sites. Once the centre of a thriving commercial, educational and religious life, and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List with the historic city in 1988, the mosque remains a monumental symbol of Kairouan's enduring spiritual legacy.
