Some 40 kilometers from Hoi An and 70 kilometers from Da Nang lies My Son Sanctuary, a collection of temple ruins from the ancient Cham Empire on Vietnam's central coast. Nestled in a small valley roughly two kilometers wide between two forested mountain ranges, the sanctuary offers a haunting glimpse into a once-flourishing civilization. Built in fired brick between roughly the fourth and thirteenth centuries and dedicated principally to Shiva, the towers formed the religious and funerary heart of the kingdom of Champa. Heavily damaged during the Vietnam War, the surviving groups were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999, and this documentary surveys them amid the jungle that has half reclaimed the site.
