Dubai Historic District, United Arab Emirates

Dubai Historic District, United Arab Emirates

Beyond its skyline of soaring skyscrapers lies a very different side of Dubai. This film traces the city's origins through its historic district, wandering past Middle Eastern markets, traditional courtyard houses and the narrow lanes of the old town where the emirate's story began. The quarter grew up along the banks of Dubai Creek, the tidal inlet that made the settlement a trading port between Arabia, Persia and India long before oil. Its houses, built of coral stone and gypsum, are crowned by wind towers that channel the breeze downward for natural cooling, while the souks still deal in gold and spices and wooden abras ferry passengers from bank to bank. Al Fahidi Fort, the oldest surviving building in the city, anchors the district.
