Mir Castle Complex, Belarus

Mir Castle Complex, Belarus

At the heart of its namesake town, Mir Castle stands as one of the earliest and most essential surviving monuments in the region, its centuries-old walls reflected magnificently in an adjoining pond like something from a fairy tale. Its name, meaning "peace", reflects its historic role as a site for signing treaties meant to bring harmony to the region. Begun in the early 16th century by the Ilinich family and completed by the Radziwills, the castle is a UNESCO World Heritage site valued precisely for its hybrid character: a Gothic fortified quadrangle with tall corner towers and decorative brickwork, extended by a Renaissance palace range and later Baroque work. Beyond the walls lie a landscape park and the domed chapel-mausoleum of its owners.
