San Pedro Claver Church, Colombia

San Pedro Claver Church, Colombia

The San Pedro Claver Church stands as a powerful symbol of faith and human dignity in Cartagena. Tracing the legacy of Saint Peter Claver, this exploration highlights its baroque architecture and the church's profound moral and cultural significance. Built by the Jesuits within the walled city, the church and its adjoining cloister were the base from which the Catalan priest ministered for decades to the Africans landed in chains at the port, work for which he was later canonized and named patron of enslaved people. His remains lie beneath the high altar. The stone façade, the cool arcaded courtyard and the museum installed in the former convent make the complex one of the most visited monuments of the old town.
