The Walled City of Cartagena is a UNESCO-listed historic center encircled by massive stone fortifications. Its streets, plazas, and colonial architecture reveal how this fortified city shaped Cartagena's history and identity over the centuries. Inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1984, the circuit of walls, bastions and gates was raised over generations by Spanish military engineers to protect the empire's principal Caribbean port from the privateers and rival fleets drawn by its wealth.
