Ijo Temple, Indonesia

Ijo Temple, Indonesia

With hundreds of heritage sites scattered across the region, Central Java ranks among the culturally richest parts of the Indonesian archipelago, shaped by grand ancient kingdoms such as Mataram, Majapahit and Singhasari. In the Prambanan District, about 18 kilometers east of Yogyakarta, stands Candi Ijo, or 'Green Temple,' one of the area's many Hindu-Buddhist sanctuaries. Built in dressed volcanic stone on a hill above the surrounding plain, it is the highest-lying temple in the Yogyakarta region, arranged as a series of terraces climbing to a main shrine that houses a lingga and yoni, flanked by three smaller subsidiary temples. From its upper platform the view extends across the plain toward the coast.
