In the Batujaya sub-district of West Java lies a unique archaeological complex bearing the same name. Its earliest temple, Candi Jiwa, was built during the era of the Tarumanagara kingdom, the oldest Hindu-Buddhist kingdom in Indonesian history, and counts among the oldest surviving religious structures on the island. Unlike the volcanic stone monuments of Central Java, it was raised in fired brick on a low alluvial plain of rice fields near the Citarum river, and survives as a broad, low platform with a stepped profile and no upper structure. Excavation of the surrounding fields has brought to light stairways, stucco fragments and further brick foundations, gradually revealing the extent of the complex.
