The Good Samaritan, Israel

The Good Samaritan, Israel

Khan al-Hatruri, known in the West as the Inn of the Good Samaritan, is a ruined caravanserai on the road between Jerusalem and Jericho, 298 meters above sea level. It now houses a museum of ancient mosaics and archaeological finds from across the West Bank and Gaza, though it is sometimes confused with the nearby Khan al-Ahmar. The spot has been identified since the Byzantine period with the parable of the Samaritan who aided a traveller beaten on this notoriously exposed descent, and successive Crusader, Ottoman and Mandate structures were raised on the same ground. Its position on the steep road down to the Dead Sea still makes the geography of the parable immediately legible.
