The Holy Sepulchre, Israel

The Holy Sepulchre, Israel

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre, in Jerusalem's Old City, enshrines what tradition dating back to at least the fourth century identifies as Christianity's two holiest sites: Calvary, where Jesus was crucified, and his empty tomb, where he was buried and resurrected. The tomb itself is housed within a 19th-century shrine known as the Aedicula. The first basilica was raised under Constantine, destroyed in the eleventh century and rebuilt in Romanesque form by the Crusaders, whose façade and bell tower still front the courtyard. Six Christian communities share the building under a status quo agreement so exact that the keys are entrusted to two Muslim families, a custom maintained for centuries.
