The Hospitaller Fortress, Israel (Part 2)

The Hospitaller Fortress, Israel (Part 2)

Built on and around the ancient city of Acre, also known as St. John of Acre, Akko holds many sites of deep historical significance. The Hospitaller Fortress stands among its major medieval monuments, though until recently only one or two vaulted rooms were known, the rest buried or hidden beneath later Ottoman construction. This second part follows the decades of clearance and excavation that emptied the buried halls and returned them to visitors, together with the tunnel attributed to the Templars that runs beneath the town towards the sea. It also looks at the Old City above: khans, hammams, mosques and covered markets of the Ottoman port, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2001 for the medieval town preserved beneath them.
