Nestled between the greenery of Fruška Gora and the blue waters of the Danube lies Sremski Karlovci, Serbia's capital of wine, culture and spirituality — a small town with an outsized cultural legacy. Its compact Baroque centre gathers a cathedral, a patriarchal residence and the first Serbian grammar school, founded in 1791, around a single square. For generations the town served as the spiritual seat of the Serbian Orthodox Church in the Habsburg lands, and it gave its name to the peace treaty signed here in 1699. The surrounding slopes of Fruška Gora have been planted with vines since Roman times and remain famous for the local dessert wine Bermet.
