Synagogue of Novi Sad, Serbia

Synagogue of Novi Sad, Serbia

In the heart of Novi Sad, on Jevrejska Street — literally "Jewish Street" — the city's synagogue occupies a prominent spot both geographically and in the historical annals of the city, standing as a testament to its Jewish community's legacy. Completed in 1909, it is the fifth house of prayer to rise on the site and the work of Lipót Baumhorn, the Hungarian architect who shaped synagogue building across the Habsburg lands. A great dome, tall arcaded windows and flowing Art Nouveau ornament give it a presence few religious buildings in the region can match. Restored and reopened as a concert hall, it remains a living cultural landmark.
