The Cathedral of St. Sophia, Novgorod, Russia

The Cathedral of St. Sophia, Novgorod, Russia

In the ancient city of Novgorod stands one of the earliest stone buildings in northern Russia: the Cathedral of St. Sophia, raised between 1045 and 1050 under Prince Vladimir, son of Yaroslav the Wise. Five lead-grey domes and a single gilded central cupola crown a severe Byzantine plan that became the model for church building across the Russian north. Part of the Novgorod Kremlin, it is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List within the Historic Monuments of Novgorod and Surroundings, and it preserves medieval frescoes and the celebrated bronze Magdeburg doors. The film presents a landmark that reflects a full millennium of Russian religious and architectural tradition.
