The Church of the Ascension in Kolomenskoye, built in 1532 on the imperial estate near Moscow to celebrate the birth of the future Tsar Ivan the Terrible, is regarded as one of the earliest examples of Russia's iconic tent-roofed church architecture. Rising from a raised base and open galleries above the Moskva River, its slender stone spire abandoned the Byzantine domed plan inherited from Kievan Rus in favour of a soaring vertical form. Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994, it is counted among the defining monuments of Russian building.
