Wat Phra Chao Mengrai, an ancient monastery within the city walls of Chiang Mai, dates to the early reign of King Mengrai (1259–1317), founder of the Lanna kingdom and of Chiang Mai itself in 1296. Legend holds that when a carriage bearing a large Buddha image broke down en route to the newly established Wat Chiang Man, the king took it as a sign and built a temple on that very spot. The image that gives the temple its name is still enshrined here, in a modest compound of Lanna-style halls whose gilded woodwork, naga balustrades and tiered roofs sit quietly among the lanes of the old town. This documentary traces the founding legend and the temple's enduring place in the religious life of northern Thailand.
