Gurudwara Sri Amb Sahib stands in Mohali, in the Indian state of Punjab, its white domes and the tall Nishan Sahib flagpole visible from the surrounding streets. Its name refers to the mango, and Sikh tradition connects the site to the visit of a Guru and to a miracle recounted in the community's oral and written memory. Like every gurdwara, it is organised around two things: the continuous presence of the Guru Granth Sahib, the scripture that is treated as the living Guru and is read, sung and attended day and night; and the langar, the free kitchen where volunteers cook and serve meals to anyone who comes, seated together on the floor regardless of standing. The film gives full weight to both, filming the kirtan and its musicians, the covering of heads and washing of feet at the entrance, the vast steel pots and the rhythm of the rolling of bread. It offers international audiences a clear, respectful account of Sikh practice as it is lived.
