Sardinia's interior is another island altogether: no sea, no resorts, a country of oak woods, granite and vines where villages sit on the flank of a hill and look out over long empty distances. Atzara belongs to the Mandrolisai, one of the island's historic wine districts, and its old town has kept a coherence that is increasingly rare — dark stone façades, carved lintels, deep doorways, stepped lanes, small squares where the church front provides the only ornament. Wine has shaped the calendar here, and the village has long been noted for its costumes and for the painters its light and its festivals attracted in the last century. Filmed in 4K, the programme takes the time to walk the streets, to look at the way stone is dressed and assembled, and to follow the seasonal rhythm of a rural community that has resisted the pull of the coast.
