スカプラリオの聖母教会

スカプラリオの聖母教会

Lithuania is among the most steadfastly Catholic countries of northern Europe, and its churches are places of active devotion rather than museums. This film enters one of them without haste. It begins with the exterior and the way the building holds its place in the streetscape, then moves inside to the nave, the altar, the organ loft and the side chapels where candles are lit throughout the day. Particular attention goes to the Marian imagery that gives the church its title, and to the objects of popular piety gathered around it — flowers, votive offerings, rosaries, the worn stone where generations have knelt. Music and chant are recorded live, and the film follows the ordinary rhythm of the week as well as the fuller congregation of a feast day. Rather than assert what it cannot verify, the programme concentrates on what the camera can testify to: a living practice, in a country where faith and national identity have long been intertwined.
