Yot Verk Church, Armenia

Yot Verk Church, Armenia

In Gyumri, Armenia's second-largest city and administrative center of the Shirak province, stands a striking 19th-century cathedral dedicated to the Holy Mother of God, better known by its affectionate nicknames: Yot Verk, or the Seven Wounds Church. The name refers to an icon of the Virgin pierced by seven sorrows, long venerated here. The building belongs to Gyumri's remarkable 19th-century townscape, raised in the local black and orange tufa by masons who gave the city its distinctive urban character under Russian imperial rule. Like much of central Gyumri it was badly damaged by the 1988 earthquake that devastated the region, and its restoration has been part of the city's long recovery.
